Working with Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse
with Katherine Cox PhD
Course information
In this training day, we examine the particular impact of sexual abuse on men. We consider intrapersonal and interpersonal, social and cultural constructions of masculinity and masculine sexuality and how this might particularly impact on male survivors.
We explore the experiences of men who have experienced childhood sexual abuse and those who have been assaulted as adults; the implications of reporting or not reporting; the impact on a male survivor’s relationships and the impact of addiction, suicide and self-harm. We consider the particular impact of female perpetrated sexual abuse and the particular experience of those with trans and nonbinary identities. We discuss ways in which therapeutic interventions can be tailored to the needs of male survivors.
Whilst the focus of the day is the impact of sexual abuse on men, the content of the day will also be useful for those working with female survivors and also for those working with men in other settings.
