Understanding and Working with Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder
with Jenny Ronayne
Course information
More than 1:100 people are estimated to be on the autism spectrum. Would you recognise that your client may have autism or Asperger’s Syndrome?
This workshop is a comprehensive introduction to autism and Aspergers syndrome. The day covers what ASD is, where it originates, how to recognise it, the typical needs for individuals with ASD and effective approaches and strategies for counselling those with ASD.
We will also consider what is not helpful when working with individuals with autism. Whether diagnosed or not, ASD brings specific challenges for the counselling professional. This workshop will address the most effective ways to approach therapy for clients with ASD.
One of our longest-running and most popular workshops.
Speaker
Jenny Ronayne is a member of the National Specialist Team on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at the Maudsley Hospital and has more than 20 years’ experience of working with children and adults with ASD. Jenny is passionate about spreading understanding and awareness of autism to all those working with or caring for those with autism/Asperger syndrome (AS). Jenny’s research for her Masters degree was a study in using Mindfulness to reduce anxiety in youths with autism and she also takes part in research projects in her work at the Maudsley Hospital.
Jenny founded SIGNAL, a thriving support group for autism in Lewisham over 20 years ago and is Director of ASPECT (Autism Spectrum Counselling and Training) which offers diagnostic assessment for children and adults, autism-appropriate counselling for couples, young people and adults and training for professionals working with individuals with autism. The brains of people with autism are structured very differently from the neurotypical person and it is this which makes it essential that those working with this population have an understanding of these profound differences if they are to provide accessible, relevant and beneficial services for those with autism.
