Death and Mortality
with Dwayne Jackson
Course information
Death marks the end of life for all of us but most of us give little thought to death or its influence on life while we are living. This course will look closely at death and mortality, focusing on death as an important life-stage and the impact of mortality on life while we are living.
We will consider death from physical, philosophical, cultural and religious perspectives and through group discussions we will examine our own beliefs and feelings around the end of life.
We will begin the morning with a brief look at the biological process of death. What happens to us physically at the moment of death and immediately thereafter? We will look at British cultural approaches to death both past and present and consider how cultural approaches to death and bereavement get shaped by political and world events
In the second half of the morning, we will look at death in Philosophy. What have ancient and contemporary philosophers written about death? We will consider whether these views are helpful and relevant today.
After lunch, we will turn to major world religions and consider their views on death and mortality. How has religion shaped our own views on death?
The course will conclude with a look at how we might apply today’s learning to our work with our clients through theoretical teaching and case studies.
By increasing our knowledge of death and mortality, through understanding cultural, philosophical and religious interpretations of death and mortality, we will be better prepared to support our clients in life. This workshop will use theoretical teaching and case studies to explore death, death anxiety and mortality. The material will not be ‘heavy’ or grim but instead should open our minds to the subject and provide fascinating insight into death and mortality.
